In short:
- The northern lights can be seen in Trøndelag on clear, dark evenings.
- Best from autumn to spring.
- Get away from city lights, for example to Frosta.
Many people think you have to go to Tromsø to see the northern lights. But in Trøndelag too, they dance across the sky when conditions are right. The picture above is from Tinghaugen on Frosta.
When?
You need darkness and clear skies. From September to March the nights are long enough. Keep an eye on aurora forecasts and the weather, and be ready at short notice.
Where?
Get away from city lights. Frosta has open fields and a clear view north across the fjord. Tinghaugen, Tautra and the shore along the peninsula are great spots.
Photography tips
- Use a tripod or rest your phone steadily
- Use night mode or a long shutter speed
- Bring warm clothes and something hot to drink
Combine with an evening in the boathouse
A winter evening at a Christmas party or Beyond the Fjord in the boathouse can, with a bit of luck, end with northern lights over the fjord on the way home.
